Why Cost of Living Became Part of Our Homeschool Curriculum
When we first started planning our world-schooling journey, one of the biggest conversations around our dinner table was cost of living.
some currency we used while visiting Vanuatu in April 2024.
How would our daily expenses compare from country to country? How could we prepare for that as a family? And how could we teach our kids to understand the value of money across different currencies and cultures?
That’s when we realised—we didn’t just need a travel plan. We needed a resource that would help us teach as we planned. Something that could guide conversations with our kids—especially Hannah (aged 11)—and turn our upcoming adventures into a meaningful part of our homeschooling journey. As a homeschooling and full-time travel family, we’re always looking for ways to blend education with real-life experiences. That’s what inspired us to create the Cost of Living Activity Worksheet—a simple, practical, and eye-opening resource that’s completely free for families like yours.
🎒 What’s in the Worksheet?
This activity helps kids explore what it actually costs to live in different countries. It’s not just about math or currency conversion—it’s about opening up conversations on:
Cultural differences in spending habits
Needs vs. wants
Budgeting and planning as a family
Preparing for international adventures
My older daughter, Hannah (who’s in upper primary), found it especially engaging. It was a perfect entry point into thinking more globally and practically about money—something most school curriculums touch on far too lightly.
Why It Matters for World-schoolers & Homeschoolers
We believe travel is one of the richest forms of education. This worksheet helps bridge the gap between where you are now and where you’re going next, both geographically and educationally.
our younger children, Maddie & Ari have learnt about Australian currency through games like this one: The pocket money game.
Whether you’re in the early stages of planning your first overseas trip or already enjoying the world-schooling lifestyle, travel can be a natural and enriching part of your homeschooling journey. From budgeting and currency conversions to exploring different cultures and daily life in other countries, there are so many ways to turn trip planning into meaningful learning.
This worksheet is a great way to weave global thinking into your homeschool routine—and it’s also a wonderful introduction to the educational travel experiences we offer for homeschooling families, where learning and adventure go hand in hand.
From Our Family to Yours
At Dream Big Travels, we’re not just another travel company—we’re a family of six living this journey ourselves. We know how exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) it can feel to step outside the routine, whether you’re planning a long-term adventure or a short, immersive cultural experience. That’s why we help families create trips that aren’t separate from their homeschooling—they enhance it. Whether you're exploring for a week or a year, travel can be one of the richest, most meaningful parts of your child’s learning journey.
