Budget-Friendly Family Fun in Newcastle, NSW: Our Ultimate Guide
Newcastle, NSW, has quickly become one of our favourite places to explore as a family. And the best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune to have an amazing time with kids! From climbing around old forts and tunnels to splashing in ocean baths, spotting convict history, and treating ourselves to a few budget-friendly snacks, there’s so much to see and do.
We packed a lot into our day (and honestly, we could have easily stayed longer!) and wanted to share some of our favourite free and low-cost experiences to help you plan your own family adventure in Newcastle.
1. Fort Scratchley – A Historic Adventure with Incredible Views
Maddie exploring Fort Scratchley
We started our day at Fort Scratchley, one of Newcastle’s most fascinating historic sites. Entry to the fort is completely free, and there’s so much to explore—old cannons, bunkers, tunnels, and plenty of space for kids to run around.
The best part? The view from the top is breathtaking, especially if you happen to be there when a large ship is being brought into the harbour by tugboat—which we were lucky enough to witness!
🔦 Tunnel Tour: We opted for the paid tunnel tour, and it was worth it, but it’s best for kids 8+ as it runs for 1–1.5 hours. Dawn, our guide, was amazing—a retired English and history teacher who kept our kids fully engaged. She only works Fridays, so if you visit then, you might get lucky!
The coal located under the fort, meant it was a priority to protect the area from enemy invasion during the world wars.
📍 Location: 1-3 Nobbys Rd, Newcastle East
💰 Cost: FREE (tunnel tour additional cost - $15 adult $8.50 kids under 4’s Free)
kids can play with and climb on the guns at during the tunnels tour, which kept my lot entertained nicely.
2. Newcastle Museum – Our Favourite Free Museum in Australia!
awesome display of the earth at the Newcastle Museum.
This was easily one of the best museums we’ve visited in our travels! The Newcastle Museum does an incredible job of bringing history to life, with interactive exhibits that fascinated our kids.
🌟 Highlights:
✅ BHP Steelworks Light Show – an incredible display of Newcastle’s industrial history. Warning for families: It’s very loud—Micah (2) got scared, and Ari (5)- and Maddie (7)-year-olds were nervous but managed to stay, with the support of big sister Hannah (11).
✅ Hands-on Science Zone – our kids loved the interactive science tables. They even got to learn about levers and lifted a small car!!
✅ Convict & Coal History Exhibits – a great way to learn about Newcastle’s past.
✅ Free Scavenger Hunt – pick up a free brochure at the information centre for extra fun! (or print it off here before you go
📍 Location: 6 Workshop Way, Newcastle
💰 Cost: FREE
3. Nobby’s Beach & Lighthouse Walk
Nobby’s beach and the Lighthouse in the far distance
We had an amazing vantage point from Fort Scratchley, where we could see Nobbys Beach stretching out below. I managed to snap some great photos, and we had planned to head down for a closer look, but just as we were about to go, the rain set in—so it’s still on our list for next time!
Even from up at the fort, it was easy to see that the walk from Nobbys Beach up to the lighthouse is incredibly picturesque, stroller-friendly, and lined with stunning coastal views the whole way. The beach itself looked pristine, lively, and perfect for family fun.
One of the biggest highlights for our kids was watching the huge ships coming into the harbour. They were fascinated by the tugboat expertly guiding a massive ship into dock—something we’d read about before but had never seen up close.
It definitely seems like a fantastic spot for families, full of activity and with plenty of space for kids to run, dig in the sand, and paddle in the shallows on a sunny day.

TIP: Avoid parking in the main car park—they’ll hit you with hefty parking fees! A friendly local dad gave us a great tip: park in the residential area on the outskirts of the nature reserve and take a short walk in. It saves money and gives the kids a chance to burn off some energy before exploring.

We didn’t get to do this one ourselves, but it was highly recommended to us as a fun and budget-friendly adventure for families. The Stockton Ferry is an easy, inexpensive and fun way to cross the harbour, and once you’re over in Stockton, there’s plenty of wide open space for kids to run, explore, and play. find the ferry timetable here
We were told the Stockton Sand Dunes are a huge hit with kids—especially if you bring a piece of cardboard for some old-school sand dune sliding! A walk along Stockton Beach is also a great way to spot shells and enjoy the coastal views. Definitely on our list for next time!

We popped into Newcastle Library and were pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and well set up it was for families. There’s a dedicated kids’ area with comfy spots to curl up with a book, loads of great reads for all ages, and even free story-time sessions during the week. It was the perfect quiet, relaxed stop in between all the adventuring, and we’d definitely recommend it to fellow book-loving families!

Along with exploring the boardwalks and spotting turtles, waterbirds, and even water dragons, I was really impressed by the variety of affordable tour options and activities available for families. They offer guided canoe tours, bird-watching experiences, and school holiday workshops, making it an amazing place to learn about local wildlife in a fun and interactive way.
It’s definitely worth checking out their website here before your visit to see what’s on during your stay.
